Avocado Tree Fuerte
Fuerte is a delicious buttery avocado that is pear shaped with a smooth peeling skin. Originating from Mexico, it was brought to California by an avid plant collector who then cultivated it and a few other varieties. After a severe cold snap, Fuerte (translates to ‘Strong’ in Spanish) was named and selected as it was the lone survivor, still standing strong, where all the others had died. Thus spawning commercial Avocado production in Southern California, which was then taken over by Hass for its superior shipping qualities.
There are still many Fuerte Avocado trees in the back yards of Suburban houses, that were once these original Groves that still have the original Fuerte Trees, cropping beautifully every year. The tree itself is a spreading tree that can grow up to 10 metres over a 30 year period. As mentioned above, Fuerte can withstand very cold, frost conditions.
Fuerte is a B type Avocado – Pollinizers are Hass Pinkerton or Reed
*Please note – these are infant trees – Look after them like your own babies. Protect from wind, sun and cold while young – Leave them in a nice warm, wind free area – somewhere like your patio. Plant out with protection from these elements.
