Black Genoa is a sweet, mid size, high yielding variety that grows very well around here, liking our hot and dry summers. Grows 3-4m.
Figs will tolerate alkaline, sandy soils, but much prefer a composted, slightly acidic soil, – you can add composted soil conditioner if you’ve got sandy alkaline soils. Protect from frosts and wind, especially when young for the first few seasons. Figs like wet winters and dry summers. Make sure your soil is free draining as they don’t like overwatering in the warmer months.
Fruit occurs twice in a year. You’ll get the first crop fruiting in summer (called the breba or la breva crop – which is Spanish translating to ‘twice bearing’) this grows on old wood, producing large fruit, but not as much as the second crop that produces more figs, grow on new growth and is the main crop of the year, ripening in Autumn. Figs are self pollinating.
