R2E2 Mango.  It’s a cross between Kensington Pride and Kent – producing big crops of large, fleshy, beautiful blushing mangos that grow well in our cooler climate. So why the name R2E2?  Apparently, it got its name from the row and position of the first tree from field trials by the department of Ag around 30 years ago.

In the home garden, R2E2 can grow into a gorgeous ornamental, shade giving tree if kept free from frosts when young.  They like to be planted in a sunny, sheltered position when young. They can get up to 8metres in height, but down here, our cooler climate tends to dwarf them.

Try squishing a leaf, did you know that the leaves smell just like a mango?   These are best planted out in the warmer months as they don’t like the cold weather and hate frost which can set back the tree. A good idea might be to grow  them up in pots until about 1 – 1.5m before planting out and keeping them in a nice, warm spot while they grow. Once planted out, protect your tree from frost and sun by using a shade structure around the tree.  Plant in soil that is enriched with compost and mulch.
